HD Music Videos + MTV's MHD
Okay, high definition is slowly becoming relevant. MTV is launching a high-def channel in January (after the jump). I have 3 questions for those in the know:
- What music videos have been filmed in HD so far?
- How quickly will the mv industry make the transition?
- How does this affect the budgets/treatments of mv's?
I've done some quick research and found a couple HD videos at apple.com.
Michel's new White Stripes video was also finished in HD.
MTV is launching a high-definition music video channel, according to this.
The service, called MHD, will start on Jan. 16 with a studio atop Eagle's Nest [in Vail, Colorado], a restaurant complex at 10,350 feet above sea level, the companies said in a press release. It will carry hip hop, rock, country, pop, reggaeton, soul and other music, original music-based programming and other content.
MHD programs will include MHD Top Ten and MHD Video Stew, in-studio events and interviews with artists.
"I don't think we could have found a better locale to give viewers a spectacular backdrop for MHD than Vail and the Colorado Rockies," said Tony Dunaif, senior vice president of business development for MTV Networks Music Group.
And..
The channel will feature original music based programming as well as HDTV acquisitions and original content from the MTV, VH1, and CMT family of services including popular series such as MTV Unplugged, MTV2 $2 Bill concerts, VH1 Storytellers and CMT Crossroads, as well as network specials including the MTV Video Music Awards and the CMT Music Awards. Distribution details for MHD and a full programming schedule will be announced closer to launch.
All my latest videos are in HD
i asked myself which video of the videos i see on MTV are shoot with a HD Camera, or a real Film-Camera. I think many videos shoot with a HD Cam. Or?
..And are they finished in 16:9?

You're man Hype Williams has been shooting and posting HD for years now. Fincher is doing everythig on the thompson viper cam. Jake Scott has been doing a lot of HD. And I'm sure there's countless others that shoot the format regularly. The bigger thing that's happening is the final output. Post houses (at least in NY) are having to convert their systems to deliver HD quality regardless of the original format. It's crazy but true. Shit betacams are being blown up to 1920.

I feel like the transition has already 'happened'. Again, it's just the final output.

Well apple is already posting HD film trailers.

You know I don't know. You could rent a cinealta for the same price it would cost to rent an arri (panavision kits tend to be pricier). The real savings is in the film and development costs. With HD it's still tape (about 80 dollars for roughly 40+ minutes). IMO, the awesome thing about HD is the telecine. If your budget could afford, a well shot HD piece could easily be corrected and enhanced via telecine and nobody would know the difference. Is this 35mm? It looks great.
Oh yeah buddy sure.
it's funny; cause I'm thinking directors need to shoot for how it plays on a video ipod, not an HD screen. Aiming for both is ideal; but some of the Imax-leaning HD stuff is hard to watch on a tiny screen.
And does anyone have any faith in another MTV video channel? It's only a matter of time before they start slipping in episodes of "the Real World: HD" every couple hours.
Adam Yauch finished the last few Beastie Boys videos on HD.
Are you asking me kevathens? If so... yes they are.
This sort of messes with the methodology for allot of people who do composite-heavy videos. Shooting HD elements for standard output gives a pretty large latitude all kinds of manipulation. The days of sloppy keying and Z-axis abuse may be numbered.
Good point najork. We will just have to start shooting with the Panavison Genesis! ;)
If i shoot on Digital the label usually gets a HD version and a Digi-beta @ (at pal and ntsc) Although i dont think many get used, i started including HD dubs in late 2003, when the Cinealta's came around, although at first we where just downsampling and getting a nice crisp NTSC, but if we shoot 35mm or even 16mm (which usualy requires some xtra post for cleaning up) we charge extra for the 1080 scan.
the video i made for michael penn is HD - got the HD master sitting on my shelf waiting for the technology, baby!
the Walter Reed video is absolutely beautiful. I posted it here I only wish someone else would have taken the time to comment about it. :/
i think there is only savings to be made in the stock/development costs area. Making HD look good needs just as much light as film, some might say even more. The most annoying thing is having to dump down onto digi for the post-prod - the cost of a transfer can be expensive. Not that many places in the UK have HD decks in-house yet. And aesthetically i think 16mm still just has the edge on HD but for how long?
