THE WILLOWZ - 19 Videos from 19 Directors + 2 Bonus Videos & Live Footage - DVD coming soon
although, Death Cab and others are trying to be the first band to slug out a slew of videos and seem to be the 'first' with the concept. the band THE WILLOWZ started this formula back in the spring of '05. they dont have the major label hype machine, but they have 19 videos on thier upcoming DVD that are nothing short of fantastic.

Hi Acid Bird!
see u tommorow at the shoot.
We're making no claims on trying to be the first. In fact all our skinny tight t shirted asses must bow down to 50 Cent as far as I've heard. With the short memories and fasionable nature of the video, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that someone like Huey Lewis did this in the 80s.
There's nothing overtly new about this, nor do I see it as a race. The more who do it the merrier. I hope more bands do it. But I also hope it doesn't become an overwhelming gimmick; the push for bands to be visually attractive has become too overt in recent years. What I hope it does it continually with the right artist and directors make for videos made in a creatively free environment.
Likewise, Willowz have had some awesome fucking videos; it sure helped Ace get on our project and land him the huge Death Cab video.
Four Tet had one this year (though I have to admit, most of the videos blow).
hey remember that episode of south park where the kid goes nuts because because everything he tries to do has already 'been done on the simpsons,' and then mr garrison explains that originality is a myth and then waxes poetic on the anxiety of influence? yeah, me too.
i suppose as a consumer, i would want the entire 'artists' creative output. it's worth more to me than a download. i probably speak for most music consumers. as for Ace....he did an excellent job. there are tons more videos that are equally as good too. the 'over-videoed' artist may come to be, but i think myspace has already ruined that - as far as wide reaching overexposure.
Yeah well this is going to be very normal soon. The video ipod is changing things.
if i were a music video director i'd be ecstatic at the possibility of bands/artists wanting lots of videos. there could be good pay days out of this building trend. if labels start adopting this, there will undoubtfully be more working directors.
I disagree. The budgets for these video spreads are spread equally thin. No one could live on making these low-budget videos.
The iPod thing would have to inject a lot of money, but I don't see that happening. It is just a fad to pay for videos.
The Super Furry Animals did this a couple of years ago as well with a collectoin of great animated clips.
It doesn't matter who was the chicken and who was the egg, it's a great thing, and only bands of a certain class do this. Imagine a Back Street Boys album with the same...
Weeping.
The iPod thing is just the beginning...
I believe the band the Sun may really be the first, their debut dvd came out this year, which includes a video for every song on the album.
the residents have done this several times. in fact in 1982 or so they undertook creating a video for every song on 'the commerical album.' they made like 4 or 5 videos and finally had other directors contribute to completing it for their 25th anniversary last year. the directors were given complete artistic freedom and did not have to film or include the band in their pieces.
they also created videos for everything in a cycle called 'land of a 1000 dances' in the late 70's. it's now a part of MOMA's permanent film collection.
they have also created cd-roms in the 90s that made entire albums into interactive multimedia, like 'the gingerbread man.'
it's good stuff; look into it...
Old news Roboshobot
maybe for you simon; you're like 35 or something... anyway, i was just trying to share this tidbit with the younger crowd.
30 dude... don't scare me.
Blondie was the first to do a video for every song. September 1979, David Mallet. Album: Eat to the Beat. Correct me if I'm wrong.
And anyway the idea of giving directors artistic freedom (and hopefully $$) to do whatever the hell they want.. I hope that becomes common practice. MV'll get really scary, but it'll be a lot better than it is now.
