Sarah McLachlan's "World on Fire," Directed by Sophie Muller
"World on Fire" and other videos are part of the fifth annual Media That Matters Film Festival, a collection of short, social-issue films by youth and independent producers. I also recommend that you check out "Battleground Minnesota" and "The Luckiest Nut in the World", both of which include awesome music.
Here is an article I wrote about music videos with social messages: "Music Videos That Matter"
We are currently accepting submissions for the sixth annual Media That Matters Film Festival, so if you know if any short films or music videos that we should consider, let me know or submit your film.
Don't get anyone started about the "World on Fire" video again. That got pretty ugly last time.
what are you talking about ! you $#%^@$%^ ! sarah mclachlan's $@#^ing deep man ! she's gonna save the world by STRUMMING
I think the "World on Fire" video causes some people to get very defensive, but that's probably a good thing. It shows that it's having an effect and even if some people choose to not hear it's message, it will do more good than not having done it at all. It's so easy to be cynical about these things, but I always appreciate it when an artist chooses to actually do something to improve the world around them.
I find it a compelling video because she looks serious in it. I don't think it would have had the same brilliant, moving effect had she been devouring Twinkies and laughing like mad. Though, really, the end result would have probably affected as many people as did the original did.
See? I warned people not to talk about it and then I started being snarky. Bad me. Bad, bad, bad.
lets face it people music videos are the cause for all the suffering in the world
