Motorola : Dir. Jonathan Glazer
Johnny Glaze does a beautiful little music video/art thing for motorola. Supposedly the client refuses to air this piece.
Haha, this can't be real.
Buy this cellphone! Make Africans kiss instead of angrily fornicate!
Still, beautiful piece without the tagline.
with every red cellphone you buy, an african man's penis will be cut off with a machete.
It's success or otherwise as a commercial withstanding this is the best thing Glazer's done for years. Far superior to the mess of his Sony Bravia commercial.
Motorola have missed a trick by getting sniffy over it - it's visually arresting and 'racy' in a way in which only charity ad's can get away with. The 0.000001% of a penny or whatever the fuck it is that would get sent to Africa every time Motorola flog one of their overpriced handsets just about puts it into that bracket.
Snip off the strap line and the gaudy product shot at the end and you've got a very respectable piece of video art.
Oh and it's very definitely real. It was shot using 40 HD cameras in a circle around the couple. The 'movement' was achieved by sampling consecutive frames from adjacent cameras and/or portions of frames to create the distortion of the bodies.
Motorola have said that the ad' will "never see the light of day". Effectively writing off about 200k UKP.
Makes one wonder what 200k could do for your average African AIDS baby :-S
my thoughts exactly. the money spent on this ad could have been used in countless ways for the very cause the ad was supposed to help. ah - advertising...when will you learn??
still - beautiful piece of work. does anyone know what particular reason this was pulled? i doubt it was valid.
beautiful piece until the title card. reminded me of the flex short that cunningham did.
No doubt inspired by Chris Cunningham's "Flex" piece.
Wow, inspiring
