LCD Soundsystem "Disco Infiltrator", Dir. James Murphy & Matthew Galkin
a day in the life...
charming enough low budget video - "rock stars are people too" - still, it seems like it was perfect for some kind of punchline... like if things took a drastic turn after the show.
ummm.... nicod... you got some unusual videos to defend, especially when they're not attacked.
"Charming enough" = pleasant if not ground-breaking.
and then "it seems it was perfect for a punchline" = wouldn't it have been neat if it had a different ending that surprised the viewer.
perfection = how about this?
good video. and great band!
it looks like a documentary more than a music video (except for the 'white on black' parts).
rockstars? i see ordinary people going to work in a studio instead than enter in an office.
punchline? in an ordinary day there are no punchlines... (that's quite sad!)
I agree, pretty good video (as far as cheap videos go), but it is hardly going to be a collectable is it? However, it does the trick by getting it some airtime on MTV, or whatever. But, rather than making personal attacks on people who don’t like a piece of work posted on this site it would be more constructive if you took on board those criticisms- it's like er, you know, ANOTHER OPINION. And just because someone does not make videos themselves does not mean that they can’t critique a video. Starting a pissing contest is nothing short of childish. Otherwise, this site just becomes some elitist club where we praise every video that is put up (a circle jerk, in other words).
while we're on the subject of lcd, does anybody else feel that the video for james murphy's collaboration with munk ("kick out the chairs; see it here: videos.antville.org) deserves re-doing, now that the track has been remixed (and majorly improved) by whomadewho?
(and, in general: how long before remixes will get their own videos?)
nicod, did you direct this?
What about my comments here are condescending?
here we are at another "what is antville?" thread...
- As cool as it would be to have a site where only working directors comment on eachother's work, it's not going to happen - when people don't have the chouce to remain anonymous then they are less likely to be critical of their peers.
- that being said, If you don't like reading critical reviews from no-names and hacks, then ignore the comments section - just click on the links, and enjoy the videos.
Nicod:
Jesus, if you are going to be tetchy about people criting your work because you don’t think they are worthy, then you had better choose a field of work which is not in the public domain because, frankly, at least people who bother to write little crits here actually care. Look, I enjoyed the video; it was fun, but I felt a little ambivalent, okay? Just get your thumb out of your arse for god’s sake and enjoy the banter.
I concur.
Being critical in a constructive way should actually be a duty and a requirement. 95% of what we see and hear is mediocre -– if not more. Not bad. Not awful. Just plain mediocre, in form, content and/or execution. If there were more people like Captainmarc22 perhaps wouldn't there be so many average videos out there -- since that's what we're talking about here, videos, with punch lines or with some edge to them, not the same run of the mill "fake family video style" piece of work or the same "run of the mill" dance video. We're not looking for revolutionary work all the time of course. Those are few and far between –- as they should be. We're merely looking for work that actually shows care and attention to details, at all levels. Doesn't have to be expensive. Doesn't have to be full of special effects. That LCD Soundsystem video, although fine, lacks the element that could have made it memorable ... for a few days. Captainmarc22 came up with good suggestions as to how it could have been improved -- which does not show that he is a smug snob who shows off, but somebody who actually cares so much about filmmaking in general and video filmmaking in particular that he looks for ways to improve what he sees continuously. And not only does he look for those means of improvement but he shares them with the rest of the world. That is extremely positive, and that is what brings value to some of the posts on this God forsaken website. It's only by attempting constructive criticism that the quality of the work that's put out there can be improved upon. If the only complacent assessment people gave was "Yeah, cooool viiid duuuuude!" we would not get anywhere, would we?
i appreciate the candid views expressed on this site, especially when they are constructive. but even when they aren't that's cool too. it gives a more complete sense of the variety of reactions that any given piece of work will receive from the general public.
Any opinion from anybody is perfectly welcome on this site. The web is kind of a weird place to be an elitist anyway, don't you think? It'd like standing at a street corner and arguing about such and such topic while refusing to talk with the bystanders who don't agree. Moreover, of course no comment is going to improve on any given work, as those are done, finished. But those comments might be helpful for the ones who are about to commit to some film/video project. Or they might be helpful to the ones who are considering getting into it, no matter the level of expertise of the people involved.
what good does a brilliant video to a mediocre song?
At best it can enhance the song and give it some context, otherwise it is a good short film with a crappy sound track. There's a lot out there...I prefer it the other way around myself, although you'd give a good treatment for even the most appalling pop song, surely.
dougal is doing the new one.
captain marc can you tell me more about the video with all the kids in it? who was director? how do i get in touch?
it is indeed perfection.
hass: he's danish, name of martin de thurah. featured on latest shots (89) too (but seen here first!). he's got his own (post)production for his animation work, but the vid was shot through rank in copenhagen, post prod: duckling.
his contacts are here: www.filmdir.dk
but: he's just signed to academy for music videos...
its fucking rubbish Hass-bot! leave him to the dogs at academy where all the other rip offs and hacks fanny around
There's also a longer version.
