interesting, not a bad selection actually... although why put 'midnight madness' in fpr best sfx, when 'salmon dance' so clearly kicks it's ass?
and how budget is budget for the budget video section? presumably that counts actual money spent, rather than trying to factor in the cost of favours? tricky one.
loz - £2k is the low budget limit apparently. The favours thing isnt tricky at all though is it, you're being silly. Hmmm? - unless of course you're intending a 'least assisted' category, or perhaps 'least effort made'.
hmm. okay maybe i am being silly, you couldn't really factor in favours.
what i meant was, that calling '2k' low budget is kind of like ignoring all the people who were forced to work for free, all the late nights, all the favours you had to pull (and possibly all the money you put in yourself). basically, my beef is that 2k won't be a true representation of how much the video 'cost' to make, and might lead certain people (unscrupulous, skanky, record company people for example) to think that it's an adequate budget to shoot on.
but that's just the hate talking. certainly big props to all in the low-budget catagory in that case.
Yeah, well i only know cos we thought we could enter in low budget and were pretty shocked at what is now considered low - or more to the point what isn't now considered to be low.
It'd help if awards like this made more effort to recognise that nigh on ALL music promos are low budget, relative to the rest of the moving image/film industry, rather than the suggestion that, say £2.5k is deemed sufficient for a 6 minute promo.
Theres some irony in that i doubt those in the low budget category will be able to afford the price of the tickets to attend their own win.
to loz:
"ignoring all the people who were forced to work for free" is in an itself a favour. where would you suggest drawing the line? should people with more talented friends be excluded?
also, 'midnight madness' and 'salmon dance' were both done at framestore, so i'll take their judgment on what constitutes a best vfx prize.
midnight madness is shit though, as a vid and an fx showcase ... salmon dance is a cracking idea beautifully realised.
But im not framestore so whaddoiknow!?
bigload: no indeed, i'm definitely not suggesting drawing any line... a 'budget' catagory is a good thing, and i'm def in favour of recognising talented friends. i just wish there was some way to acknowledge that 2k videos are only possible if people don't get paid their due.
and puttyfingers: indeed, you hit nail on head, only not quite so harsh... personally i think the non-fx parts of midnight madness are pretty damn good. no disrespect to framestore.
Nice selection but I'm not sure what their criteria is for a "british" video. Why is Wanderlust in multiple catergories? especially if there's an international category.
The low budget award should be scrapped. There was a time when it honored work that was being done on passion projects. Now it's just a slap in the face.
who do you think should/will win the best director and best new director awards? I hope nima wins the best director- his LES Artistes and ready for the floor vids are two of the years highlights if you ask me.
gotta say, i have equal respect for most of the names in best director... as for best new director, that's trickier. James Copeland's 2 Mystery Jets vids did severely tickle my box, not to mention noah & the whale. but without soudning trite, they're all pretty damn good.
vote now; in case you need a refresher, here are direct links (the voting site's own suck - get sorted ukmva...!):
