2009: A year in Edits
This post is dedicated to the edits (roll music).
It's safe to say that 2009 had some great clips, and some swam and some sank based on their post.
This is a collection of the ones I thought swam, I'm sure there's more. In no particular order:
Royksop "This must be it" Ed: Unknown.
Who cut this? I looked everywhere and couldn't find a credit. This is one of the best cut videos I've seen in awhile. That concept would've fell flat in lesser hands. Perfect.
Hecq vs Exillion "Spheres of fury" Ed: Christopher Hewitt & Tim Brown
This is straight out the Cunningham playbook (good thing) and it is incredible. I wish it were longer. The twitchy editing style could be out of place, but here it works. That color grade is incredible.
Vitalic "Poison Lips" Ed: Julian Levy
It tells you everything and absolutely nothing, perfectly timed.
Vitalic - Poison Lips (from the album Flashmob)
Uploaded by Differentrecordings. - Watch more music videos, in HD!
CSS "Move" Ed: Keith Schofield. This came out in 2008 but what the heck.
Gotta give props to Keith on this, the timing is perfect and the sequence just moves. The framing device is neat.
Super Submarina "Super Submarina" "Ed: Guillem Ventura?
Striking juxtaposition of images, cohese.
Charlotte Gainsbourg Feat Beck "Heaven Can Wait" Ed: Keith Schofield.
The preferred cut is this one, it's so much better than the one the label released. Differences are minimal, but tone is different. It has the shot of the guy getting the wax poured. It's more sinister. Watch Charlotte's perf on this one, it's darker. Beautifully done post production.
Jarvis Cocker "Further Complications" Ed: Edouar Mailender.
Clever. Timed greatly.
The Hickey Underworld "Blonde Fire" Ed: Manu Van Hove
It's kinda hard to fuck this one up. A very original video.
"Neurosonics Audiomedical Labs Inc" Ed: Editor: Joe Randall Cutler.
I know how hard it must've been to sync that stuff.
Birdy Nam Nam "The Parachute Ending" Ed / Compositor: James Littlemore.
Bravura work.
Franz Ferdinand "Can't stop feeling" Ed: Russell Weekes.
Fun. Pain in the ass must've been.
Health "Die Slow" Ed: Unknown.
Late addition to my list, this is great save for wishing the framing on the mediums was same aspect ratio as the main video. Good job.
Conscious: 2009 saw some striking clips, notice the absence of big videos? that's because their coverage is shot to pieces in post. All those Rihanna and Gaga videos go from close up to medium and back and forth, or they look like a drunk Editor (or Director) cut them to appease the suits. Post deadlines severely compromise into what can be done, and some labels see post as a throwaway. I know because nobody seems to have money for it.
Any video can be cut well with proper timing and skill, the good directors (like Schofield) time their edits in their head (or animatic) while CERTAIN artsy ones worry about how it's gonna cut later. Nobody knows who we are anyways. I'm sure there's more, I turn over the mic to Antville.
Is Alanedit really Keith Schofield in disguise? Hilarious. "this one's from 2008 but what the heck"...did you not see enough videos to make up your list or you on Schofield's payroll?
@miss_nitrate: no Alanedit is not Keith Schofield in disguise. That is a ridiculous notion as Antville knows he doesn't hide.
What's even more ridiculous is the thought of Schofield being a Thulsa Doom figure, with subordinates at will. Is that sorta what you mean?
So I'm supposed to take out the clip at your claim? pleeeease.
CSS was such a well edited clip that it didn't matter what year it came from.
I saw ALOT of videos this year and these were the ones that stuck out. For some reason I thought CSS was 2009 but I was informed it was 2008 after I did a search. Does that remedy your blues? miss nitrate? and if there were videos I should have seen...
Better yet why don't you post them?
Whoop Whoop, that's the sound of the police, like KRS One says.
Unhappiness already in this thread. :-/ Ah well. I just wanted to thank Alan for pointing out a few videos I somehow missed this past year. Holy crap, some greatness passed me by! That Birdy Nam Nam is fantastic.
Yep, enjoyable post. Cheers!
I missed the Jarvis Cocker video. Bloody brilliant.
I thought Beyonce "Single Ladies" was worth a mention as it won best editing at the VMA's. The editor, Jarrett Fijal, was up for two other nominations for best edit at the VMA's
Thank you@ yourgoodtwin, and saddy. There is happiness in this post. @MW247 Single Ladies was one camera whole dance, got nominated for editing and won. One of the few big videos where post (not only the styling) is worth mention.
Agree about the Royksopp video, the edit/direction is a stand out! Maybe Andreas edited it himself?
A few that came to mind:
Oasis - Falling down / Editor: Tom Lindsay
Major Lazer - Pon De Floor / Editing & Animation: Zachary Johnson & Jeffery Max
Poni Hoax - Antibodies / Editor: Mark Maborough
The Penelopes - Stuck in Lalaland / Editor: Mark Maborough
Yeasayer - Ambling Alp / Editor: ??
Also.. Julia Knight is really great!
Defintely not 2008.. but the edit in MGMT - 'Time To Pretend' had an amazing dynamic.
@igor: yeah these are great ones! I certainly thought about the Pony Hoax one, thanks for the Julia link checking out her work.
See, somebody knows we exist!
just wanted t say: stellar post alan. (would love to see others rise to the occasion.)
Alan Capriles, it's Julien Levy and Edouard Mailaender Mark Maborough: www.markussmood.fr Amblin' Alp edited by Rob Wilson
