Justin Timberlake "Lovestoned" : Dir. Robert Hales

According to Wired: "Justin Timberlake's new video for "LoveStoned" debuts a new technique that uses a spectrogram to interpret images through the soundwaves of the song."
I smell a fugazi though. Compositors will know what I'm talking about. This is clearly shot on green, affected via sound keys with the occasional addition of 3D pulse like elements. There may be some proprietary plugins, but is otherwise relatively straightforward in technique.
that was too repetitive. it could work as a projection at a club
Goodness during the interlude, Mr. Timberlake looks old.
Too repetitive.
Didn't Elliot Jokelson use something like that for TV on the Radio? He used a "Rutt/Etra Video Synthesizer", but I don't really know what that is.
man that's boring.
looks like hes standing on a giant maxi-pad at the end. Yes, Kev, it was very simailar to the TV on the Radio clip, thought that right away.
looks more like using the spectogram plug-in for after effects as masks for the video layers. meh.
Here are some IDM audio file spectrograms.
pet peeve: when directors/artists present a video by proclaiming they came up with some breakthrough technique to create it. The work should stand on its own, and/or the new technique should be obvious (like most Gondry videos).
God Robert Hales is a G. Yeah, could have used a bit of variation but still pretty stunning.
Also, how many 2001 references can you spot? (I see 2)
suckitude=8.5, photoshoptastic rating=10
it was trying to be ground-breaking and graphically interesting yet it failed on so many levels. and what's with the interlude section? did they run out of footage or an idea so they greenscreened him into an old busted tron set? the concept of the video could have worked if it felt less forced and more natural. less computer and more craft please. someone, anyone.
Direct rip off and executed with signifigantly less grace....
