Hard-Fi - Cash Machine (dir. Dougal Wilson)
New from Dougal Wilson. Looks nice -- not crazy about the song or concept though...
breaks my heart a bit cause wilson is easily my favorite director at the moment, but this just isn't up to snuff, esp. not after lcd, streets and dizzee!
does anyone else find the concept a little too obvious (the song's called "cash machine"!) and gimmicky, especially for someone of wilson's talent? i'm disappointed. also, he really needs to stop settling for such ordinary songs.
yeah kind of a dud. the lead singer is pretty irritating.
the idea isn't THAT bad - he just doesn't do that much with it. yeah I would never guess this was done by Dougal Wilson.
He needs to do another Chikini video!!
no it's not bad at all! i guess i just have high hopes for dougal.
oh man is the track awful. the video felt strangely like... an ok uwe flade.
i like any video where the band is tiny. but i wanted to see them take the concept a little further out...
i liked how they were developing the whole system of making the money - going back to the trees and stuff, but it could have been even MORE complex, like an entire tiny, underground economy.
like they could have traded with cockroaches for scraps of paper and harvested earthworm blood for ink.
well dougal gots to pay bills too guys. pity about the tacky sets tho.
harsh comments on a job that does everything a pop video is supposed to from the record companies point of view as well as taking it somewhere different.
I think this is 90% better than 99% of other music videos - can you see Madonna risking a concept like this or anything where she doesn't have to dress up as a teenage girl?
It's all well and good being 90% better than 99% of other music videos, but Dougal's standards are higher than this. Constructive criticism for a below par effort is valid.
Wonderful ideas poorly executed, I don't like the edit either.
Fully agree on the lead singer of this band, there's something wrong with his mouth.
this sounds like some kind of shitty howard jones song from twenty years ago.
err...wiggle....90% better than 99% of other music videos? i don't think so....nothing like over promoting your own directors...
sadly, this is a very weak video from Dougal. Interesting concept, poorly executed. The edit is ponderous, the post is shonky and some of the actio within it is positively embarassing. Pushing over the tables at the end.....geez....back to the drawing board....
hey wiggle, not saying it doesn't do what it should for the band; i'm thinking more from dougal's perspective...
er... im repping dougal and i think this is a cool pop video.
I know that if I'd commissioned I would be very happy as it will romp home on the A list at MTV and is radically different to anything the band have done before
i don't like the record but directors have to work with what is available at the time and after a year of missing out on jobs as first choice from the label because dougal has had a commercial that clashes hard fi were a good option.
not many bands with a budget want to do something different so as a director (and production company) you have to take chances when they present themselves.
Or live in a box in the street.
remember: directing music videos is a job not just a vocation
Can't comment - link's down. Kinda eager to see this one too.
I'm sure those that work in the industry understand your point hassinator, but those that don't won't necessarily.
In the same way you criticise a footballer if he has a shit match for the team you support, so it is fair for people that admire Dougal's work to be a little disappointed when it doesn't quite touch the previous heady heights he has reached.
I'm sure neither you nor Dougal are close to living in said box in said street.
sorry for delay in response but couldn't find a parking space for my ferari.
it is indeed tough at the top and fair comment - everyone has an opinion on music video and aren't afraid to share them
fingers crossed you all like his next one...
Hey, Toppy, Its a bunch better than most promos out there.
Its easy to criticise one peice of work as being not up to scratch, especially in the light of Mr Wilson's canon. its also easy to criticise from the comfort of your own pc.
I feel the "service" your mum gave me the other week wasn't up to her usual level, but i could still praise the good points.
No rejection without direction i say...
