The Chemical Brothers - The Test (Dir: Dom & Nic)

oilfactory.com

I stumbled across this video the other day, thought it was absolutely beautiful and very atmospheric. It reminded me of Martin de Thurah's video for Royksopp.

Good point, actually. Never thought of that. Dom & Nic are doing a new vid for Chem Bros. Good luck to 'em!

Rather flat throughout and very un Dethurah like. Oil Factory says:

"A girl emerges from an underwater adventure of glowing jellyfish and massive whales to a world of mind-bending effects."

...Which effects were those?

Outside of de Thurah's own vids, are there any videos that are more like What Else is There than this one?

In a way, What Else is There = The Testn, where n may be somewhere between 3 and 5.

de Thurah + Dom - Nic * Oprah = ?

This video owns, I'm not sure what lusk is talking about. Also by Dom & Nic and also awesome in a hilarious 90s way: Setting Sun.

I've seen the 'girl swimming with glowing jellyfish' shot done a million times since this video, and they all look silly by comparison. It walks fine an impressively fine line. It's slow meandering pace, and stopping just short of too-pretty, afford it a sense or immersion in what normally ends up feeling like tableaux.

see your point, kee, and it's a fair try, but it feels pastiche rather than poignant. a number of formal elements - central suspended female, juxtacuts, impressionist lighting plus house (actually a steve mcqueen filch) - do not a dethurah make.

with that out of the way: it ain't half bad.

damn where's the link gone? i loved this video, was looking forward to revisiting it.

progosk, June 1, 2007 at 6:58:11 PM CEST

it's on the oil factory site, but for some reason i can't get to it (or any of their mov's) directly, only clicking through from the main page. (same problem, anyone else? what is that? specifics on the referring page? or are they blocking my ip??)

kevathens, June 1, 2007 at 8:04:31 PM CEST

It's probably something in their .htaccess file (a kind of site-setup file) that kicks every mov url back to the front page, regardless of IP. Could also be a couple lines of php. They added that a short while after RSA did the same thing.

It's one of the best videos i have ever seen. How old is it: 5 years?

90's tastic. I LOVE YOU DOM AND NIC. And your mindbending effect. ;)
