Music Videos By Oscar Winning Directors
List in comments.
Mike Nichols (1967)
Boy George "ich bin kunst" (2002)
Unable to confirm if it is the same Mike Nichols or find a version of it online.
John Schlesinger (1969)
The Why Store "Father" (1996)
William Friedkin (1971)
Laura Branigan "Self Control" (1984)
Jonathan Demme (1991)
New Order "Perfect Kiss" (1985)
James Cameron (1997)
Martini Ranch "Reach" (1988)
Steven Soderbergh (2000)
Yes "I've Seen All The Good People" (1985)
I believe it's from his Grammy nominated concert film "Yes:9012 Live". I can't find a verified version on the internet.
Ron Howard (2001)
Michael Sembello "Gravity" (1985)
From the soundtrack and contains footage from his film "Cocoon".
Roman Polanski (2002)
Vasco Rossi "Gli Angeli" (1996)
Martin Scorsese (2006)
Michael Jackson "Bad" (1987)
Robbie Robertson "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" (1988)
Kathryn Bigelow (2010)
New Order "Touched By The Hands of God" (1987)
Danny Boyle is credited with directing a video for Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" in 1996, but I think its just clips from his film "Trainspotting". Mel Gibson supposedly starred in Brett Ratner's video for Michael Jackson's "Unbreakable" but the single was never released.
I don't think the list is conclusive and if anyone has any information I'd be greatly appreciative.
Nice bit of trivia is that New Order have had 2 videos made by Oscar winning directors. Also the best 2 on this list too in my opinion.
nice & intresting list, thanks for that.

Bertolucci(?)
This is my list of some famous feature film directors (I don't know if they have won oscars)
Wim Wenders : U2 - Electrical Storm
Michelangelo Antonioni: Gianna Nannini - Fotoromanza
Lars Von Trier: Laid Back - Bakerman
Joel Schumacher: scars on broadway - world long gone
Don Bluth: Scissor Sisters - Mary
Luc Besson: Isabelle Adjani - Pull Marine
Sean Penn: Peter Gabriel - The Barry Williams Show
Sofia Coppola: THE WHITE STRIPES - I just dont know what to do with myself
we counting Fincher?
Gondry.
Spotters badge for dek - good find.
najork: Fincher was only nominated, as were Coppola and Antonioni from jevaad's list. If you look at nominees you can also include such luminaries as Van Sant, Lynch, Scott, Hackford and Spike Jonze. Gondry has never been nominated for his directing prowess, but has shared the best original screenplay Oscar with Charlie Kaufman and Pierre Bismuth for "Eternal Sunsine of the Spotless Mind".
gondry is still an oscar winner who is a director and who has made music videos. which is the criteria of this post.
vidiot: I'm not arguing with your point, I was just pointing out all the others listed had won the best director oscar. If we open it to all Oscars then Sofia Coppola goes from being a nominee to a winner as she too has won best original screenplay (the year before Gondry).
Seems like an appropriate point to share this play-list of feature directors who have made music videos. Enjoy.
keef and jevaad, you should post some of the videos on your lists - some good stuff there. And keef, (2 time Academy nominee) John Singleton also directed this bit of house;

@senility - thanks for that, fun and interesting. Someone in the comments pointed out that Bob Rafelson directed 'All Night Long' which i had forgotten about.
In the 3 years since this post I can now add Gore Verbinski (for Rango);
) )and some guy named Spike Jonze.
(co-directed by Eminem, an Oscar winner)
