MATT BARBER "You Are My Friends" (Ben Piety)
This isn't the best of music videos, but this guy came in to play where I work and I had to do something. 18 years old, traveling the country and spreading happiness. A wonderful, funny, beautiful kind of guy.
Send him a word of encourgement www.myspace.com
By the way, the break dancers were a wonderful accident. Enjoy!
this is undecided.
presumably you could either do a spike jonze/errol morris, and try to distill some weird universal truth out of this slice of nondescript average america - but then it needs to be cut a lot tighter/to the point.
or else you could schmaltz it up into a farcical portrait of ordinary delusion, and make us laugh.
as it stands, it's just cringeworthy (and cruel).
I can see how this may come off as a cruel video, which is not my intention. When Matt came into play that evening there wasn't a crowd. And you could see how people were reacting to it, when I did have a guest or two come in for coffee. His music is bloated, long, "cringeworthy".
I think the tone, slow pace, cheesy graphics and awkward cutting hightens the experience that he gives. When you watch Matt Barber you feel uncomfortable and you want it to be better, but the truth of the matter is, it's not.
But what's amazing about Matt Barber is that he doesn't care, whether or knows or not that he's not the best singer/songwriter. He's out there playing no matter who's listening or how the audience reacts. As a filmmaker, I try to set the tone of the film/video as the audience's perspective. At the most crucial part of the video (we're distracted and looking at break dancers behind him).
But, this doesn't matter to characters like Matt Barber. He's going to play and sing, no matter what people say or think or do. I could never do what he does. And I find that incredible. And that is his art. I think some people might find this funny ( I do ) others may see it as a cruel joke. I find it exactly the experience that I received that evening.
I would never hope to just rip off what Jonze or Morris do. I just tried to give an honest reaction to this sort of Americana.
This of course, was only my intention. And your points are well taken. I can only try to attempt something, and sometimes I'm not the best at acheiving it. Thanks for the comment.
