Loretta Lynn featuring Jack White "Portland, Oregon" 2004
I had never seen the Olivier Gondry version until just now - thanks kevathens/director-file.
It's interesting but I can see why it was rejected. The Matrix-ish effects aren't a good match for their target audience (boomers and country music fans); plus it's VERY dizzying - in a bad, make you nauseous way.
Sophie's is well done, and a much better fit (if a little boring/conservative).
Always interesting to see the "what if"... two completely different videos were made.
I would like the be the musician who can say, "yeah, you know? I know it's finished and all, but let's not use the video with the helicopter shots in it."
They should have used parts of both. The second one is boring. And allthough the idea with the camera circle is great the one by Gondry looks a bit one dimensional to me.
ugh - both of these are as bad as the song. but a nice lesson in comparative vid 101.
Should be noted that Olivier's vid here is an unfinished version. If anything there would need to be more cutaways..
Olivier Gondry is mostly terrible. I don't know how he keeps getting work...oh that's right, his last name is "GONDRY". If there's a lesson to be learned in all this, it's that you should change your last name to "GONDRY" if you want to get videos handed to you.
His Tiga's - "You Gonna Want Me" Video ist great!
While I am a fan of anything that breaks cinematic conventions and pushes technical boundaries I agree the Gondry video is a bit flat. That said I am happy for him to keep making videos if it means more visually interesting videos and less straight performance sludge.
twist's ok go do what you want was another excellent application of his style of trickery. it's not infrequent, though, that his technical prowess is a bit off the mark.
im gonna vomit.
thats what i thought after watching this video.. then i went on to the gondry..
the spin may have worked if it was a whole lot slower and only at the very very beginning and very very end, but it needed some substance in the middle 3 minutes.
i love this song, but both videos were stinky.
whoah! the gondry clip can't be judged, its far from complete, obviously all the cameras will be removed and each shot will be colour matched, plus whatever other post processes gondry had up his sleeve, either way it would have turned out polished like the tiga clip
watch that then judge where he was heading
having said all this, it seems you can't teach an old vfx supervisor new tricks, the matrix is so 90's step up oliver
