Discussion: MTV2 moves Subterranean to 3am permanently
They'd rather show Jackass and Viva La Bam repeats at 11pm.
This is close to death knell for the show. No reason for bands to even appear on it.
Where do any of you see videos on television any longer? Do you at all?
i dont have mtv or mtv2 where i live, well i could but i would have to pay extra money for it.
here we have 3 music channel, musicplus, muchmusic and muchmore if im not mistaken. none of them i like. so i try to find the videos i want on the internet witch is not really hard, esp here on antville.
my friends watch mtv hits and mtv jams all the time (or at least have it on in background). there a couple more mtv channels they have too. i personally watch fuse the most, but of course the paradigm is changing and hopefully i'll have a part in that. also, just from the quality of vids they show on the jamz channel (from what i've seen), it's arguable whether or not they should be shown at all. i wouldn't watch them. like it's been said it's better to pick and choose on the internet.
Believe it or not, Fuse actually shows videos for most of the day, and they are actually good rock ones to boot. Pretty heavy on the pop punk stuff, and their playlist could use a little more diversity, but overall pretty damn good. Their show the Dive is their version of Subterranean, but of course it's only a half hour shown around 1 am Saturday nights.
thats it. now there is really no reason to watch m2. 3am sunday night, ridiculous
I'd say that Wondershowzen's a pretty good reason to watch MTV2. But I totally agree with the other video nuts here, the US needs to catch up to the rest of the planet. Anywhere you travel--even Mexico--you can find videos. I can't wrap my mind around why a network wouldn't jump at the chance to run content they get virtually for free. It boggles my mind.
Sheesh, it is a bit bullish, I agree. I still watch all the channels (VH1 Classic when I'm at my sister's).. But as for the indie vids, I wait for the DVDs and still, er, get vids, um, in the, uh, mail..
It's hard to know where MTV's vp of music programming (et al) is going with this. They may think that indie ppl are getting all their vids on the Internet now, which a good portion are, but seeing these vids on TV is much better than on the Internet.. As always MTV/2 is trying to wisely find their niche as the Internet/MySpace steals their youthful thunder. It's smart to go with exclusive, original programming, in a survivalist sense. Though I don't know their numbers..
Or, perhaps they're planning on something else..
I do like Wonder Showzen and Andy Milonakis though.
Oh xaviercm,
Have you never heard of the Wedge? It's got Antville-esque videos on MuchMusic at 11 p.m. However, you have to deal with a new utra-low budget Castle Project video every other week.
I wish I had MTV Canada (which is technically a talk television station) had Wonder Showzen... That kid who dressed up as Dead Pope was hi-larrious. Aw well...
MTV Canada is a waste of time - they don't show music vids.
MuchMoreMusic (similar to MTV 2 I guess) shows videos alot.
The best show is on MuchMusic - it's called the Wedge and it is the only hour a week of good music videos they have
it's unfortunate that back when i was in high school in the mid-90's, the wedge used to be on every day at 5pm or so. now it's on once a week, friday at 11pm. i don't think i've caught a single episode in the past year, even when they've shown my own work. times have changed. muchmusic is gradually moving more in the direction of MTV and showing more and more "original programming" than they are videos.
The VAST majority of people who watch TV would not be into the videos favoured by Antville. The videos here are - for the most part - weird and esoteric, and it's absolutely no surprise that they're marginalized in mainstream media. This is a very small pond we're swimming in.
When was The Wedge on at 5pm? Back when I watched it (early '90s) it was hosted by KCC at 11:30pm on Fridays. Did they move it to an evening slot for a while? Haven't seen it since maybe 1993.
it might not have been 5pm exactly, but was after school, early evening/late afternoon. at the time it was hosted by sook yin-lee. every weekday.
Just a note: I may be really wrong, but I feel in terms of music programming that MTV/2 are somewhat underestimating the tastes of their audience, and the power of their own medium. (Though I'm sure Viacom's stockholders - whomever they may be - have their own needs..)
the easiest way to handle the problem: forget MTV.
the wedge definately was on pretty much right after school (after rap city)- hosted by sook yin lee everyday. I have about 8 vhs tapes full of it - it is still good now but how often are you really going to catch it at 8pm/11pm on friday night? zed on cbc in canada should step it up and play good videos but it doesnt quite cut it as is
I remember now. It was City Limits I used to watch, not The Wedge. City Limits was on at midnight on Fridays. I've never really watched The Wedge I guess:
City Limits info -- "The program was hosted by Kim Clarke Champniss. After alternative rock's commercial breakthrough in the early 1990s, the series was cancelled and replaced by the daily series The Wedge. The Wedge offered a much more commercially palatable set in accordance with its daytime scheduling and thus lacked the edge of its predecessor."
Wedgesque (blog) compiles each Wedge episode online with video links. I don't often see anything of great interest on there.
We still have New York Noise (those of us who live in NYC, at least).
What do you expect when you show indie videos from bands predominately not on radio, hosted by someone no one likes, and in a terrible timeslot on the worst possible day of the week to show it.
Honestly, just bring back 120 Minutes w/ Matt Pinfeld and people will come.
Here's another New York show: cliktrax.com I haven't seen it as I'm in LA...but it looks promising.
also, here's a show out of LA: refused.tv
the best show ever, though, is a little-seen one ;)
Matt Pinfield just showed up to a slightly re-vamped VH1 Top 20 Countdown. (!!!) Matt is my hero. props too to Kennedy..
WERD REFUSED TV!
TODAY ON MTV2 WE GETTIN SOME HYPE YO! www.mtv2.com
windope only bs, hakai. where's a real link (co-premiere it on antville, come on...)?
My fucking website is being rebuilt be a machine. I have no linkage to the past thursday at this moment. I will soon...
Do you think the re-scheduling could have anything to do with the self-involved crap-fest that was this week's subterranean? "Directions" is the eptiome of what the "maintstream" doesn't "get" about "indie". Half-baked ideas executed in a semi-competent manner set to faggy whine-music.
oh and I love how bands always talk about their videos as if they had something (or anything) to do with making them. It's never - "the director had a great idea" - it's always "well we we're talking about what we liked...and it just sort of evolved" Self-important yammering about crappy work they didn't even create.
I CAN'T TAKE IT ANY MORE
I don't watch videos on tv anymore, what's the point now that Subterranean is practically obselete. It's sad that there is only one show that airs decent videos to begin with. BUT on a positive note, if you go to mtv2.com and click on shows then subterranean, you can watch all of the current sub. videos online.
I am jumping into this one a little late, but the only reason mtv2 broadcasts original programming instead of videos is because of ratings. They get better ratings with shows and in turn, their ad sales go up. I'm suprised they are still airing subterranean at all. As someone who has worked over there and at MTV for several years, it's very frustrating. I mostly watch videos now online. Sites like Antville make it so much easier to find something new and interesting to watch that would never air on a network.
i think Wonder Showzen is ... i think Mtv is ... and lastly...
