Basically a top 50 play list from '08. Most of these videos were featured staples of at least 4 to 6 weeks at some point, many are still in regular rotation.
Let it be said... Thank you to everyone involved in producing & posting these. I & my audiences have enjoyed each & every one of these thoroughly. They have been found to be of appreciable caliber, worth, & supreme entertainment value.
They also happen to,quite literally, represent the present state of the art in contemporary music videos.
I thought it might be appreciated by some here to consider that their work has been duly considered & highly enjoyed by an objective audience of people in a forum other than that of the highly critical visors who frequent this site. That is to say the audience they have actually been intended for, being... The General Music & Film Consuming PUBLIC.
GOOD JOB people!
jesus. how can you have that many favorite videos? i can barely come up with 5. i guess you're easy to please. or i'm too picky

best "urban"* video i don't get this one. doesn't "urban" qualify the music not the video? shouldn't there be other music categories (rock, soul, pop, dance) then? like captainmarc22 said, maybe it just needs to be renamed...?
best editing Alphabeat 'What is happening' Huoratron - $$Troopers
best music video of the year Justice - Stress Dir. Romain Gavras Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)
cinematography - empire of the sun - walking on a dream
edema - as is known, i'm with ye on this, but the stalwart ghettoist majority saw fit to insist on instituting a little side tent for black music videos (to put it bluntly). in a democracy, folks get what they deserve...
hipgno - where do you show stuff? does the 'ville get real world attribution? (on which subject, stay tuned, folks, for initiatives this coming spring...)
prog - You're extremely obtuse. I for one welcome your explanation on what the citizens of antville should believe on this topic.
i take obtusity (speaking of which where's he disappeared off to...?) as a compliment. oh, and: i ain't gots no solutions - just nagging questions... and: QUIT EDITING YOUR COMMENTS!! ;-)
take my nominations as questioning the confining comfort of that label. no need to belabour the point beyond that.
I thought the 'urban' category acknowledged that most antvillers basically like hipster stuff, and the category was to there to keep people from ignoring the fact that tons of great work comes from mainstream hip hop and R&B. Right?
wait, i still don't know what the heck happened?
what means mainstream? (no: honestly.)
confining comforts: the perversely soothing effect of outsourcing your values.
labels, k - same comments apply. ciao for now.
my neck's bout as red as yours, frate. (oh, and: fiorentina's not my cup o' tea.)
las-o baltă...
what makes you such a bitter cunt matei? as regards my points about "urban", if you're not going to even attempt to parse them, why do you feel you need to pass your summary judgement? why's it you can't resist pissing up the place?
okay, settle down guys.
The call for an "urban" category is an American thing. I don't think anyone in Europe would quite understand it.
In the US, the only station that plays videos is BET - all hip-hop and R&B. And these are the only videos which consistently have budgets in the six figures. The Billboard charts are probably 80% hip-hop & R&B.
And: the commissioning of these videos is completely different than the process for a Beck (or Dizzee Rascal) clip. Conformity is the norm; and few artists (and by extension, directors) are willing to try any ideas outside the box. It's all the same angles, lenses and telecines; and it's mostly clubs and girls.
That is one reason why these videos so rarely show up on antville - they're a completely different genre with different rules and different expectations.
However: it's not impossible to make an interesting clip. It's just the work should be considered a class of their own because the genre is so different.
progosk's first language is legion's second, and progosk's second language is perfectly understandable in legion's first. yet you both can not understand each other, and it is obvious to everyone else you are both cut from the same cloth. please try to play nice boys because you are both important to this blog.

@progosk: this blog is not at all about lectio and disputatio, this ain't no place for scholasticism. i'm part of the, i quote,'stalwart ghettoist majority'. we don't debate, we just rebuff. we don't think, we just set cars on fire, like in that deeeeeeeeeeeeep social commentary 'justice' by gavras.
anyways, let's leave it at that.
k then, do stick to rebuffery, mr. shoeshine. bygones≃bygones.
me and kanye, yes. and mr jesus. speaking of which, why isn't this urban video on antville yet?

@progosk: Have just wrapped up a 3 yr. residency at a little club here in Dallas, Tx. Have been doing 2, 4 hour sets a week of MV mixed live on multiple large screens in a lounge environment. Had 2 yr.s prior to that at an even more obscure location here. I think it's the optimal way to view them. LIVE,LOUD, & completely MIXED like any DJ would mix music, except with MV it works on so many levels & can cover such a vast array of genres depending on the room at the time.
I Feel it has helped to turn some of the more astute in our local scene on to some great artists & in some small way re-kindled interest in MV as worthy club/lounge format & a great way to survey music in general. However, it has been a bit of a self-initiated labor of love & produced in a bit of a vacuum with no promotion or label / artist support as I've yet to be able to raise much interest in it from a distance.
Obviously the 'ville is a great source for me, but have actually only started using it in the past year or so.
I would really like to know about anyone else who DJ's using music video as I see little sign of this anywhere on the web with the exception of a few mentions of dance oriented material here & there. I think it is an extremely viable format & all the crowd response I've gotten has been overwhelmingly positive. People are ready for it.
I'm interested in pursuing efforts to push the medium in this direction & would appreciate any ideas how to go about doing so.
I'm presently working on a relocation to Austin, Tx. & have hopes to bring this same format to some arena there as it is more of a music town.
I've activated the link to my URL on myspace & welcome anyone with serious intentions or input on the subject to get in touch.
Thanks for asking & sorry for the off topic flood. I would have e-mailed you personally, but frankly wasn't sure how. I'll remove this upon request.
The call for an "urban" category is an American thing. I don't think anyone in Europe would quite understand it.
Oh I think they would, unless:
-
Major European record outlets don't display an "urban" music category, like they have done in the UK for the past ten years or so.
-
or they dain't visit record shops all that much then.
So I suggest that music or video that has the moniker 'urban' is well understood in what it represents
Not as much moved me this year as the last, or it's been harder to keep track. A few that lingered in my mind...

Je penses qu'il ya beaucoup des personnes ici qui ne pas comprends le Francaise (comme Shatner).
do excuse my french - no more bets, alea jacta est.
correct form: ' je pense qu'il y a beaucoup de personnes qui ne comprennent pas le francais
Well it's a good thing I am not in school anymore, isn't it!
I think the best stuff I saw this year that I'd nominate for whatever applicable categories were
Empire of the Sun's Walking on a Dream Fleet Foxes White Winter Hymnal (and it should be down for cinematography cause the stop motion lighting was unbelievable) And some of Rik Cordero's work, especially the Qtip stuff. Gnarls Barkley's Soul
Keith, of course, finally got where he deserves to be this year. Director of the year for sure.
I nominate "the Galactic" for best "urban"* video.
